March 5, 2013

The Stone Foxes, Super Food Drive, and The San Diego Rescue Mission team up for Healthy Hunger Relief.

The Stone Foxes and Super Food Drive will be hosting a very special Super Food Drive at the Stone Foxes show on March 6 at the Casbah in San Diego:

According to Super Food Drive, 1 out of 6 people visit a food pantry because they can’t afford to buy food. 50% of these people are children. This same population also tends to suffer from obesity and chronic illness like diabetes and heart disease.

Blobfish? So, I’m just making it look like a blob?”

“Yeah, basically.”

“Can I do a nose? I love doing noses.”

“Sure, evolution, whatever.”

October Shows of Interest, San Diego CA

Not that anybody asked, but there are a TON of cool shows this month and I’m really hoping to make most of these…

  • 10/3 For Strangers and Wardens @ Lestat’s - My good buddies FSaW take the intimate stage at Lestat’s. I don’t go to so many venues without bars (shocker) but this one has me making an exception. Plus it’s all ages, so I can bring Thing 1.
  • 10/5 Admiral Fallow @ HOB - HELL YES! Not sure if these Scots have been to SD before or not. I started listening when I heard they opened for Frightened Rabbit (also in town this month!) on a European tour and was immediately hooked. This will be a good one, even if it is at the cavernous HOB. (Yuck)
  • 10/5 Burning of Rome CD Release @ Casbah - Same night as Admiral Fallow, but I’m hoping an early set at HOB means I can cruise to the ‘bah to catch one of San Diego’s best new acts drop their new rekkid. FUN!!
  • 10/7 Dry the River @ Soda Bar - Not sure you can call an English band “folk” but why not? A good, cheap show two blocks from my apartment. Win. Win. Win.
  • 10/8 Bettye LaVette @ Anthology - O.M.G. I love love love this woman. The teeniest, tiniest old woman with the biggest voice you can imagine-it nearly defies logic. This is some truly powerful soul music. Ms. LaVette is simply amazing. Do not miss.
  • 10/8 Divine Fits @ Hard Rock - Supergroup featuring musical genius Britt Daniel. ‘Nuff said.
  • 10/10 David Byrne & St. Vincent @ Humphrey’s - I’m in love with a girl named Annie Clark Swoon. Oh, and David Byrne’s had a pretty decent career too. (Tentatively scheduled to see this one from a boat!!)
  • 10/11 Ezra Furman @ Eleven - This is sure to be a blast. In a hot, tiny room with some racous loud music. Last time he was in town the show was woefully underattended…F-U UCSD. Seriously though, this cat is cool as shit. See video above.
  • 10/11 Bad Books @ Irenic - Two supergroups in the span of three days! This one has Kevin Devine and members Manchester Orchestra. Sweet.
  • 10/12 Old Tiger CD Release w/The Heavy Guilt & Nena Anderson @ Casbah - More good buds getting their due. Some of the coolest dudes in town, and though I’m not sure I can make this one (#singledadproblems) I will be there in spirit. Congrats my brothers! Oh, and The Heavy Guilt & Nena Anderson are both pretty awesome too.
  • 10/15 Tim Easton, Nena Anderson @ Soda Bar – Wikipedia sez, “Tim Easton is a Joshua Tree, California-based American guitarist and singer-songwriter playing rock and roll music.” Count me in. Oh, and hey, it’s Nena again! #swoon
  • 10/19 Bowerbirds @ Casbah  Folking-A, this will be a good one too. Here’s the first song from Bowerbirds I ever heard and the one that hooked me:
  • 10/20 Rocktoberfest! – REALLY solid lineup here: Mariachi El Bronx, Silent Comedy, Transfer (meh), Hyena, Blackout Party, Mrs. Magician, New Mexico…but I’ll have to miss the Bronx so I can make it to FR on time…(next)
  • 10/20 Frightened Rabbit @ Irenic – More Scottish rockers. If you don’t already know them, then I don’t think we can be friends anymore.
  • 10/25 Calexico, The Dodos @ Belly Up – The new Calexico record has jumped way near the top of my “2012 Best of” list. It’s that good. Oh, and the Dodos too?? Yes please! (Good work Casbah!)

Untappd - Drink Socially: New Badges For All! →

It’s been a while since we’ve released any new core badges. I know many of you have been itching for more challenges, so today we’re happy to announce that we are adding 8 brand new badges for you to unlock!

These badges mainly focus on beer styles and a couple specific venue types.

Check out this little band I absolutely adore! The Local Strangers are from Seattle and playing Casbah on 8/1. They played Tin Can last year to a horribly small crowd. Let’s make sure it doesn’t happen again!

It’s also a going away party for Natalie Kardos (@toosunnyouthere) who’s apparently moving to…you guessed it, Seattle. I don’t know Natalie particularly well, but I do know she’s cool as hell and a great concert photog and will be missed.

Complete lineup:

This will be a FUN night, mark your calendars now! See you there!

Title: High Hope Artist: Glen Hansard 39 plays

Glen Hansard - “High Hope”

SO happy to have new Glen Hansard music in my life! The eleven new tracks that make up his solo record, Rhythm And Repose, are stripped down, and gorgeous indie-folk gems. Man I love this guy so much.

"Sea of Heartbreak" Another beauty from @DavidRMayfield courtesy of @sddialedin

Awesome vid of @davidrmayfield Parade from @sddialedin when they played Wintson’s last summer.

This here dude playing that banjo is Franz Nicolay. He also plays an accordion. He was/is in some very cool bands (The Hold Steady amongst them!), played session bits on rekkids with other great musicians (ie Frank Turner, etc.).

Oh, and he is performing at Soda Bar tonight in San Diego. I’ll be there. Will you?

Event info:

JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound covering Wilco. BRILLIANT.

Saw these cats in Columbus (OH! IO!) last fall…phenomenal. Playing Casbah on 3.26. Can’t wait for this show!
